2020 August 4, Hangzhou, China. Geely Auto, one of the fastest-growing automotive companies in China, today announced that cumulative sales of vehicles utilizing the Compact Modular Architecture-based (CMA) developed jointly by Geely Holding Group and Volvo Car Group surpassed 600,000 units in July. The milestone coincides with the 10th anniversary Volvo Cars acquisition by Geely Holding Group, China’s leading privately-owned automotive and mobility services group. Under the stewardship of Geely Holding Group, Geely Auto and Volvo Cars have worked together over the past decade in the areas of joint development, production, and procurement which has led to strong synergies and increasing sales volumes from both brands.
Geely Auto now plans to utilize the highly successful Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), on a new range of vehicles in coming months. Following Geely Auto’s successful adoption of CMA for its flagship Coupe SUV Tugella which begins overseas sales later in the year.
For Geely Auto, CMA has become the launchpad for Geely’s 4.0 era driven by technologically advanced products based on new modular architectures.
Speaking on the debut of the Geely 4.0 era, Geely Auto Group Vice President Feng Qingfeng, said: “For Geely, the Compact Modular Architecture is the DNA behind our evolutionary automotive manufacturing and development ecosystem which will breathe life into many advanced high-tech products. Standing as a leader of the global industry 4.0 revolution, CMA not only gives Geely a future-proof vehicle architecture, it also allows us to endow each new product with the highest pedigree genes in terms of safety, sportiness, and intelligence.”
The extension of CMA symbolizes the latest area of cooperation between Geely Auto and Volvo Cars, which have worked together over the past 10 years on joint development, production and procurement which has led to strong synergies and increasing sales volumes from both brands. Geely Auto and Volvo have sold more than 600,000 units based on CMA since its introduction.
CMA was developed in Geely Holding’s China-Euro Vehicle Technology Centre (CEVT) in Gothenburg, demonstrating win-win cross-border collaboration between Europe and China for global automotive applications. The platform architecture was developed to be highly flexible from the outset, supporting traditional combustion engine solutions as well as mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure electric options allowing Geely Auto, Volvo, Lynk & Co, and Polestar to develop models tailored their individual unique characteristics.
Geely Auto’s investment in R&D, design and engineering has contributed to sharply increased consumer appeal of Geely branded vehicles, with Geely Auto sales rising threefold from just over 450,000 units in 2010 to 1.36 million in 2019. The combined Geely Holding Group, including Volvo Cars and Geely New Energy Commercial Vehicle Group (GCV) saw its annual sales break 2 million units for the first time in 2018 and again in 2019.
